Backflow prevention devices are an important part of your irrigation system because they keep water from getting back into your drinking water supply. It is recommended that backflow devices are tested annually to ensure all parts are working properly.

In water supply systems, water is maintained at a significant pressure to enable water to flow from the tap, shower etc. When pressure fails or is reduced as may happen if a water main bursts, pipes freeze or there is unexpectedly high demand on the water system, the pressure in the pipe may be reduced and may allow contaminated water from the ground to be drawn into the system.

Local water districts are responsible by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for maintaining a certain level of in potable water systems.  Each water district has different requirements but many require annual testing of backflow prevention device.
